Arne Slot: Mo Salah deserves “great farewell” – but “it’s not only about Mo”

Arne Slot has paid tribute to Mo Salah after his decision to leave Liverpool, urging fans to give him and his team-mates the support they need in the coming weeks.

Salah is set to depart Liverpool after nine seasons this summer, having reached a mutual agreement with the club to terminate his contract a year early.

It means the Reds’ third-highest goalscorer of all time will leave on a free transfer, with all options still open to the 33-year-old as he awaits offers for his next move.

Between now and the end of the campaign though the focus will be on Liverpool – and Slot has given his reaction to the news after returning to the AXA Training Centre this week.

“I’ve mainly seen this as a fan, so watching football, seeing him playing at Liverpool, doing all these special things that he’s done for this club,” Slot said of Salah’s impact.

“Of course, in the fixtures against [Man] City but in all the other fixtures as well. He broke record after record after record.

“Then I started working with him and already the first day I was impressed by his professionalism because as with any season, it starts with a test that shows how much they did in the off-season and he beat all of them.

“He was the fittest player that came back, and I think that’s the ideal situation that you want as a manager: that your star player comes back as fit as he did.

“He had nothing to prove, but for himself he had a lot to prove because Mo always thinks he has to prove something every three days.

“That hunger never stops and that is something that I find most special about him.”

Liverpool supporters already know how special a player Salah is and with his departure now confirmed he can expect a hero’s reception in each of his remaining appearances.

There are as many as 15 games left to play before the end of his time at Anfield – if Liverpool reach the finals of the Champions League and FA Cup – and Slot reminded fans of their role in ensuring a successful conclusion.

“Mo definitely deserves that the fans give him a great farewell,” he added.

“If they want to do it game after game after game, I’m completely fine with that, because it usually helps players if they get the help from the fans, but it would be perfect if it’s not only about Mo.

“There’s every right that it should be about Mo for everything that he does for this club.

“But we are playing for something special and I think every player needs the support of our fans in the upcoming period.”
