Jack Ross is one of the names the Scottish Football Association has shortlisted to become their new chief football officer.

The former Hibs and St Mirren manager is currently Newcastle United's head of football strategy.

The 49-year-old is one of the leading candidates the SFA wants to replace Andy Gould, who is leaving to take a top role with FIFA.

It remains to be seen if Ross can be persuaded to leave his existing role with the English Premier League giants.

It is a major appointment for the SFA, as they seek a successful candidate to implement a world class performance strategy, helping to create a winning culture for elite players from youth levels up to Steve Clarke’s top team.

Ross has a wealth of experience as a player and manager. He has managed at Alloa, St Mirren, Sunderland, Hibs and Dundee United.

Ross moved to Newcastle in 2023, where he has worked behind the scenes and his way up the ranks.

His first role with the Magpies was as interim head of coach development and then he moved to his current role in 2025.

The SFA has been inundated with applications and gone through various interview process to get down to their final list.

Some major powerbrokers at some big clubs in Scotland have put their name in the hat.

The governing body are looking to make another major appointment. Head of men’s elite strategy Chris Docherty is also set to exit his role.

Gould and Docherty recently compiled an eye-opening report on how young players were developed in Scotland between the ages of 16 and 21.

The report led to the current cooperation agreement that has been successful introduced to the Scottish game this season, with club putting their players out on loan to certain clubs for free, but with the option to recall them in and outside of transfer windows.

The report also called for the disbandment of the SFA’s performances school, which is in the process of happening.
