Liverpool are already planning for what promises to be another busy summer in the transfer market. The Reds have made early progress, securing two signings who could play key roles in the years ahead.

While it is unlikely that Arne Slot’s squad will see the same level of spending as last summer, the club are moving swiftly to stay ahead of rivals in the race for top targets.

Chief executive Michael Edwards has already greenlit two defensive acquisitions. The most significant is Jeremy Jacquet, who will join from Ligue 1 side Rennes following a £60m agreement reached in January.

Jacquet, a centre-back, was considered for a winter transfer but remained at Rennes for six more months to continue his development.

The second confirmed signing is Austrian under-18 international Ifeanyi Ndukwe, another centre-back viewed as a long-term prospect.

Since his move, Ndukwe has featured increasingly on the bench for Austria Wien, though his first-team debut is still pending. Liverpool are also linked with moves for several other defenders as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of next season.

The Reds, alongside Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, are all reportedly interested in signing Jules Kounde from Barcelona this summer.

The French defender is contracted to the Spotify Camp Nou until 2030, but all three Premier League clubs could be ready to test Barcelona’s resolve once the transfer window opens.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are closely monitoring Kounde’s situation at Barca despite his long-term commitment to the club. Arne Slot’s side are targeting a strong defensive full-back to complement the attacking Jeremie Frimpong, signed last summer.

Manchester City are also monitoring the player, having already shown interest, while Chelsea remain long-term admirers, having tried to sign the France international during his time at Sevilla. The Citizens have made informal enquiries about his availability.

Barcelona sporting director Deco recently confirmed that genuine European interest exists in the versatile defender, though no official bids have been submitted.

Barca remain publicly committed to Kounde, who has cemented his place as Flick’s first-choice right-back, but financial considerations could ultimately influence their decision.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Deco explained: “There wasn’t an offer as such, but City called to ask if he was available. Since we told them no, there was no offer.”

While Kounde remains a key figure for Barcelona, having made 40 appearances this season, the club’s need to fund potential signings like Julian Alvarez and Alessandro Bastoni could complicate matters. Additionally, Barcelona are reportedly working to extend Joao Cancelo’s loan from Al-Hilal as tactical cover.
