West Ham’s Gabriel Caliste misses out on Africa Cup of Nations qualification

Caliste had not won any of his nine games for Mauritius before the March international break.

This run included three consecutive 0-0 draws against Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa in the COSAFA Cup.

Mauritius’ most recent fixtures were home and away games against Somalia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Having drawn 0-0 in both legs, the tie was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.

Mauritius lost the shootout 4-2 and will not be heading to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to play in AFCON next year.

This was Caliste’s second shootout heartbreak of the season after West Ham’s National League Cup final defeat.

The central midfielder played seven minutes before missing the decisive penalty as the Hammers lost to Boreham Wood.

Caliste‘s focus will now return to West Ham’s Premier League 2 game against Tottenham this weekend.
