Celtic and Southampton are also in the race for the Queens Park youngster
Queens Park star Harris Afzal is set for a move south of the border despite Rangers expressing an interest.
The fullback has been on the radar of the Light Blues, Celtic, Crystal Palace and Southampton, however reportedly, the English clubs have their noses in front in the transfer race. The Saints invited Afzal for a trial earlier in the year as they looked to be the front runners for his signature, but Premier League Palace have now thrown a spanner in the works with a bid of their own.
A Scottish left-back who likes to bomb forward, starting his career with The Spiders, natural comparisons have been made between Afzal and Liverpool defender, Andy Robertson, who made his move south of the border in 2014 when he left Dundee United for Hull City. With both Palace and Saints submitting eye-catching bids, Afzal now looks to be following suit.
Rangers target faces club choice dilemma
According to TeamTalk, both English clubs have bid £40,000 for Afzal, who now must choose between St Mary’s and Selhurst Park. He has already agreed terms with the South London side however Southampton remain in the picture in their pursuit. Rangers and Celtic continue to monitor his development closely through local scouts. Afzal has impressed for Queens Park at youth level and has already been involved in Sean Crighton’s first team.
Should he make the move to Southampton, he’ll be taking the same path as Steven Davis, Virgil Van Dijk and Victor Wanyama from Scotland to the south coast, who all went on to have successful careers. However, the Premier League status of Palace, as well as their reputation of giving youngsters a chance, may just swing his thoughts in their favour.
What other player are Rangers monitoring?
The Light Blues have been linked with fellow Scottish-based stars, Luke Graham and David Watson. The latter is set to leave Kilmarnock in the summer on a free with Rangers, Celtic and Hearts circling Rugby Park. Graham is contracted to Dundee until 2027 but Rangers are closing in on a deal this summer, with the help of Andrew Cavenagh’s further £16m investment.
Elsewhere, Hudderfield Town midfielder, Cameron Ashia is on Danny Rohl’s radar. The 20-year old is also being looked at by Celtic as well as a whole host of EFL Championship clubs. His contract at the Accu Stadium runs out in the June.
The Rangers boss will also have to make a decision on whether or not he wants to pursue star man Mikey Moore after he returns to Tottenham. Rohl stated he’d like to hold on to the winger for as long as possible, however his transfer fee for the Premier League giants would likely be out of Rangers’ price range.
