Karl Darlow may not know what waits for him beyond this summer, but if recent years have taught the Leeds United goalkeeper anything, it is to be prepared for all eventualities.
Signed in the summer of 2023 after leaving Newcastle United behind following nine years at the club, the now 35-year-old finds himself currently the number one goalkeeper for his club in the Premier League and the number one for his country, Wales.
The autumn of his career is certainly proving to be a fruitful one, with a gamble of sorts paying off. Eager to play some games, Darlow went out on loan in January 2023 to Hull City, with that loan move paving the way for a deal a few months later at Leeds.
Looking back, Darlow says the move happened at the perfect time. Speaking to LUTV Darlow said; “I think it came at the right time for me.
"I was at Newcastle. I’d been there a long time and, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the place and I loved the club, but at the time I wasn’t playing and I was getting no younger, and I went out on loan to Hull.
“I really enjoyed my time at Hull, with the intention for myself of getting out that summer. That’s why I did the loan, because I wanted to leave in the summer, knowing that I wasn’t going to be the first choice.
“I wasn’t going to be the second choice, and I didn’t want to play the third-choice role because I felt like I could give more than that still at this time in my career.
“So yes, it came at exactly the right time, and thankfully Leeds United wanted me, and yes, the rest is history.”
