'Hold talks': West Ham contract update suggests club legend has made retirement decision

Lukasz Fabianski will have an important decision to make when his West Ham contract expires at the end of the season.

The Polish goalkeeper has spent the last seven years in East London, making over 200 appearances in all competitions.

Now, the 40-year-old must decide whether to continue playing or finally retire from professional football.

The latest report on Fabianski’s future suggests he already knows his next move, even though it has not been announced.

The Athletic’s recent audit of West Ham’s first-team squad included a brief comment on Fabianski’s future.

The report revealed the goalkeeper has not spoken to the board about a new contract despite having only weeks left on his deal.

“[Fabianski] is yet to hold talks with the club over a contract extension but does appear open to remaining at the London Stadium in some capacity.”

It is fair to assume the mention of “some capacity” suggests he is looking for a new role within the club.

Fabianski had previously expressed his desire to work with the West Ham academy once he calls time on his playing career.

“I’ve spoken with people at West Ham’s coaching staff, and I know it’s a very demanding and intense job,” he told SportoweFakty in February.

“I’d definitely be very interested in working in the West Ham academy. I think a mentoring or youth coaching role would be a great option.”

Given that the Hammers let him go last summer before bringing him back months later, it seems unlikely he will continue playing.

There has also not been any reporting of him looking to play in a lower division or in another country next season.

The most likely outcome appears to be that Fabianski will soon announce his retirement and then become an academy coach.
