Ibrahima Konate“more likely” to stay at Liverpool

Ibrahima Konate has been one of Liverpool’s most dependable defensive pillars since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, forming a formidable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk that helped the Reds clinch Premier League glory last season.

At 26, the French international is squarely in his prime and a fixture in Didier Deschamps’ France setup heading into this summer’s World Cup. It’s exactly the kind of profile Liverpool have built their defensive identity around.

But with his contract set to expire at the end of June, the clock is ticking and a resolution is yet to be reached.

Despite months of inconclusive negotiations, a significant detail has emerged from The Athletic. According to a new report on the matter, multiple sources with links to the Liverpool dressing room believe Konate staying at Anfield is currently the more likely outcome. That’s a notable shift from the mood just a few months ago, when an exit appeared to be the more probable scenario.

Liverpool have not given up on keeping him, though club insiders are clear that no breakthrough has been reached and that an agreement does not feel imminent.

Talks reportedly began as far back as October 2024, with several offers tabled all without success. Konate currently earns around £150,000 per week and is seeking a raise that would bring him closer to the club’s higher earners. For context, Florian Wirtz takes home approximately £250,000 a week.

Over the international break, Konate spoke with ESPN and seemed to suggest he would be at Liverpool next season, saying:

“We will have success and when we win the Premier League or Champions League, people will forget every bad season we had because now we won the league last season. Two years before we played Europa League, but people don’t talk about this any more,” the Frenchman said.

“This is just part of the success and we have to be relaxed because we have amazing fans, we have to stay together, and the success will come for sure. Maybe this season, or maybe in the future…”

The key phrase, of course, is “maybe this season, or maybe in the future.” It would be strange for a player to talk about success in the future if he was planning on leaving the club.
