Panel says VAR right to not intervene in contentious United penalty shout at Cherries

Referee Stuart Attwell and VAR Craig Pawson were criticised particularly by United for not awarding a spot kick to the visitors to Dean Court for a challenge on Amad Diallo.

The United man went down under the challenge of Adrien Truffert and shouts for a penalty were waved away on the field, as Bournemouth broke and went on to score moments later through Ryan Christie.

That drew the game level at 1-1, and the KMI panel said Attwell was right to not award a spot kick on the field, 3-2.

They then unanimously agreed that the decision did not meet the high threshold for a VAR intervention.

On the initial decision, the panel noted: "Whilst Truffert runs a risk, the contact made was not impactful and therefore below the high threshold for a foul."

But the two panellists who believed it should have been awarded on the pitch said Truffert’s challenge was "non-footballing and a penalty should have been awarded".

In determining that the VAR was right to not intervene, the panel said it was "in keeping with the high threshold for VAR overturns".

The decision to award the Cherries a penalty and to send Harry Magurie off later in the game for a challenge on Evanilson was supported 4-1.

Junior Kroupi converted from the spot to draw Bournemouth back level at 2-2, which was how the game ended.

An earlier challenge in the penalty area between Maguire and Evanilson was also looked at, and it was unanimously agreed that it was not a foul.

Andoni Iraola said after the game that he believed the referee had reached the right decision on all four penalty incidents.

Manchester United, though, were not happy and indicated they would raise a formal complaint over the decisions, with Michael Carrick venting his frustration too.
