Newcastle United target Mile Svilar
Mile Svilar has increasingly emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A, and Newcastle United’s transfer interest in the ex-Benfica player is now being pushed forward.
Earlier this year, Sport Witness covered Tottenham’s interest in the 26-year-old, who was seen as a replacement for Guglielmo Vicario.
At that point, Roma were believed to want €70m to sell Svilar, whose value has risen since his arrival in 2022. His growth had also attracted scouts from Manchester United and Chelsea, who were left impressed.
Gazzetta dello Sport have taken a closer look at Svilar’s transfer future, which can potentially lie at Newcastle United.
Newcastle United can get transfer discount
The newspaper make it clear that AS Roma, due to financial fair play worries, need to make a sale by June 30th. Manu Kone, Wesley and Evan Ndicka are in the mix to leave, but there is belief Svilar can also depart.
The Serbia international has the highest value out of the others and he can witness an Alisson-style exit from Rome.
Newcastle United are one of the clubs who are keeping an eye on the transfer situation. Chelsea are also interested, with Svilar on the radar of many other international clubs.
Roma signed him for free in 2022. This means his exit will go down as a huge capital gain and go a long way to easing their financial woes in the summer.
They need ‘at least €50m’ to let the player go, even if they would prefer a higher fee. Alisson joined Liverpool for over €70m, but given it’s all profit they’ll accept less this time.
The Giallorossi have already drawn up plans for replacements, as Guglielmo Vicario and Marco Carnesecchi are on their shortlist. Both would cost less than €50m.
Svilar can give stability between the sticks
This season, Newcastle United have witnessed a bit of instability in their goalkeeping positions. Nick Pope hasn’t started in the last few games, with Aaron Ramsdale trusted ahead of him.
Someone like Svilar can prove to be better than the duo. He has played regularly since Daniele De Rossi started managing Roma, making a mark as a bold shot-stopper. Even on the ball, Svilar has witnessed improvement under Gian Piero Gasperini.
He is also younger than Pope and Ramsdale and as things stand, has quite a bright future. So if given an opportunity, Newcastle United should attempt a transfer for Svilar.
