Steven Gerrard is open to returning to Liverpool as assistant to an “elite manager,” but the club legend has distanced himself from an interim role.
Gerrard had been touted as a possible option to take over as interim head coach if Liverpool sacked Arne Slot before the end of the season.
The noise inside the club however is that the Dutchman will not only be backed for the rest of the season but is expected to keep his job heading into the new campaign.
But while a leading role is unlikely, speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard confirmed he would be open to returning to Liverpool as assistant manager in the future – though he doubts his credentials for an interim position.

“I’ve got a brilliant connection with the club, I always have, and probably a stronger connection since I left. They’ve always been unbelievable,” he began.
“Any area I could help the club in, I’d always try to do it if I could.
“But I suppose what you want to know is do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life? Of course, that’d be a dream.

“Would I be ready for it right now, to take it over a period of time? Probably not.
“But is there a possibility in the future to be beside someone, those elite managers you’re talking about?
“It depends who it is and how the conversation goes. Does he need me? What does he think I can offer? As long as I’m not sub I’ll be fine!”
Asked about the difficulty of dropping into a secondary role having already managed Rangers, Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard said: “You have to understand it before you sign up to it, what the role is.
“It’s to support the manager, to be that assistant.
“I would do it for Liverpool Football Club, if I was asked and if they felt I was the right man to do it, I’d be open to it yeah.”

A popular decision among fans would be appointing Xabi Alonso as new manager with Gerrard installed as his No. 2 – though new reports suggest it is unlikely Fenway Sports Group will consider the Spaniard.
Gerrard responded directly to Gary Neville’s suggestion of the pair working together, joking: “I can just see the headline now, ‘Gerrard wants Slot to get the sack!’.
“I want to really, really answer this the right way. I want Slot to get the opportunity to fix Liverpool. I think he deserves it.”
