Andy Robertson’s name doesn’t get linked with Celtic without reason, and fresh comments from England have brought the idea back into view again.
The Liverpool left-back has been a regular at the top level for years, but his situation now looks less settled. His place in the side hasn’t been as secure, and there’s a feeling things are starting to change at Anfield.
That has sparked talk of a move back to Scotland. For Celtic supporters, it’s a link that always lingers, but this time it feels tied to something more real.
Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele has added to that, describing Robertson as “out of favour and out of contract.” That kind of update changes how possible a move might be, especially for a club like Celtic.
If that’s where things stand, it creates an opening that hasn’t really been there before. Celtic have needed a steady option at left-back, and it’s a position that hasn’t fully settled across the season.
But it raises an obvious question around Kieran Tierney. It’s hard to see either sitting out regularly. Tierney can play inside at times, but both are natural left-backs who want the same space on the pitch.
Wages are another issue that can’t be ignored. Robertson’s salary at Liverpool would sit well above Celtic’s current structure. Even with a contract running down, that gap doesn’t disappear easily.
Timing also comes into it. Celtic will be looking at their squad for next season, especially in defence. A player like Robertson doesn’t become available often, never mind one who knows the club and what’s expected.
It wouldn’t be about easing him in. He would be expected to make a difference straight away. European nights, tough away games, matches where defending comes first before anything else.
Money will still be the main question. Wages, interest from elsewhere, and whether Robertson still wants to stay in England all play a part.
But the feel around this one has changed slightly.
