Paul Merson has delivered his verdict on Leeds United’s FA Cup clash with West Ham, and it points to a tense afternoon at the London Stadium.
Leeds head into Sunday’s tie looking to build momentum, while West Ham host the contest with their own expectations of progressing in the competition.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Merson wrote in his Sports Keeda column that he expects a tight game with little to separate the two sides across 90 minutes.
Merson predicts penalties heartbreak for Leeds
The former Arsenal midfielder is backing the contest to go the distance, with neither side able to find a decisive edge in normal time.
Can Leeds genuinely win the FA Cup?
Leeds are one of six Premier League clubs left in the competition…
“Leeds haven’t been scoring a lot of goals lately but I expect the shackles to be off in this game. I’m backing this game to go to penalties and then West Ham to nick the win in the shoot out.”
Merson’s call is for a 1-1 draw across regulation, before West Ham come out on top from the spot. It is a prediction built on fine margins, with the outcome ultimately decided by composure in a shootout.
Merson highlights Leeds attacking concern
A key part of Merson’s thinking centres on Leeds’ recent struggles in front of goal.

He pointed directly to their lack of cutting edge as a factor that could limit their chances of taking control of the tie during open play.

At the same time, he expects a different type of game compared to recent league outings, suggesting Leeds may approach this one with more freedom.
That balance between attacking intent and end product could prove decisive if the game follows the path he expects.
FA Cup run comes with added pressure
Merson also raised a broader concern about the timing of the tie and what progression could mean for both clubs.
“Whoever wins this game, it will be big for the fans. But they will be playing the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on a weekend when their relegation rivals will be in action a league game. So I’m not sure if having an extra game helps in this context because the pressure will be on.”
QUARTER-FINAL 1: Brenden Aaronson or Joe Rodon?
Who is your Player of the Season?
His view is that success in the competition may not come without consequences, particularly with league positions still in focus.
That context adds another layer to Sunday’s clash, even if the immediate focus remains on securing a place in the next round.
For Leeds, the challenge is clear. Match West Ham across 90 minutes and extra time if required, and then hold their nerve if it comes down to penalties, where Merson expects the tie to be settled.
