Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has confirmed he will retire at the end of the 2025-26 season. The 38-year-old joined Club Brugge from Liverpool in the summer of 2019.
Mignolet has won four league titles and a Belgian Cup. He was part of the Reds’ 2019 Champions League-winning squad. Mignolet began his career at Sint-Truidense and moved to Sunderland in 2010.
Mignolet retired from international football in 2023, having earned 35 caps for Belgium and featuring at three World Cups and two European Championships.
“I am happy that I was able to return after my injury and put myself once again in the position to experience these last games as a fit player and contribute on the pitch,” Mignolet said.
“What I want to promise our supporters is simple: the end result is not completely in my control, but my commitment, willpower and determination will be there every day until my very last moment at Club Brugge.
“This is how I have always been and this is how I want to finish. This is not the time for extended thanks or emotional retrospectives. Not because there aren’t any, on the contrary.
“But because the story is not yet finished. There are still ten important games ahead of us with one clear goal: to become champions and grab that second star.” Mignolet’s final official appearance will be the home game against KAA Gent, marking the end of his playing career.
Mignolet enjoyed a six-year spell at Liverpool, making 204 appearances and keeping 65 clean sheets. He joined from Sunderland in 2013 and had an impressive debut season under Brendan Rodgers, famously saving a last-minute penalty in his first competitive home game.
Despite a brief period out of the team in 2014-15, he regained his spot and was a regular under Jurgen Klopp, featuring in both the League Cup and Europa League finals during Klopp’s first season.
Competition arose with the signing of Loris Karius in 2016, but Mignolet reclaimed the starting role, helping Liverpool finish in the Premier League top four and qualify for the Champions League.
He started 22 games in the first half of 2017-18 before serving as back-up to Karius during the club’s run to consecutive Champions League finals.
After Alisson Becker arrived in 2018, Mignolet remained as a top-class deputy. His efforts were rewarded with a Champions League medal following Liverpool’s 2019 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. He then moved to Club Brugge to seek more regular playing time.
