“I love it because it's real football” - Connell looking forward to season's climax

Each of the four games are away from home and they will be played in a congested period that will help to set the players up for the careers to come, the boss said.

That run begins today when they travel to Charlton Athletic, before a trip to Fleetwood Town on Tuesday next week, before a Friday visit to QPR and another Tuesday game at Hull the following week.

Coming after a difficult run of three games in a week, Connell knows they must relish this opportunity.

“I love it because it's real football,” he told the Daily Echo.

“It's what their careers will be. It's what they need to be prepared for. So you've got to be robust, you’ve got to be ready to go and deliver, because when people come to watch you play, they don't care about what you've done before.

“It's like, can you perform in that 90 minutes? So that's the challenge that all these players now are stepping into. So this really sets them up for their careers.

“We had it back end of last season. It served the lads well. And hopefully, if we can perform in these difficult circumstances, then it will really set them up for their careers.”

Bournemouth currently sit third in the Professional Development League, with a new structure to the competition this term.

Connell explained: “It's a 20-team league. They've combined it and the top eight will get in the playoffs.

“So, we look quite well established in there. But whilst there's a chance to try and come top of the league, we'll obviously aim for that.

“But I just want to see us look like us every time we step on the pitch, which is high-energy football with and without the ball.

“And that's the main thing I'm after, and seeing the individuals flourish. But whilst we're learning and developing, let's try and win along the way, which is what I always encourage.

“Because again, I've been there as a player, and that competitiveness has to be there, and also performing under pressure has to be there.

“So yeah, important stage of season for them, and I'm really pleased with everyone, but we've just got to keep wanting more.”
