West Ham
West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez could return to the pitch with Fenerbahçe later this month.
Last August, West Ham let the midfielder join the Istanbul club on a loan deal with an option to buy.
Multiple injuries have limited the midfielder’s game time at Fenerbahçe. To put it in context, he’s missed over 100 days and 20 matches so far this season and is currently out of action.
The Mexico international underwent surgery in February for an ankle injury and is yet to return to the pitch. He played 1,125 minutes from 17 matches in all competitions for the Yellow Canaries so far.
His Süper Lig statistics per game are as follows:
Tackles: 2.5
Clearances: 0.9
Ball recovered: 5.0
Interceptions: 1.5
Duels won: 5.5
On March 25th, Sport Witness covered claims from Turkey that he was in the Netherlands working on his recovery.
West Ham man returns to training
Ovaciones in Mexico claim Edson Álvarez is ‘getting closer and closer’ to recovering from the setback.
The West Ham United owned player was at the Mexico camp during the last international break.
He travelled to his country to ‘receive treatment’ from the national team physiotherapist, Carlos Peçanham and has already returned to Fenerbahçe. He also took to Instagram to share photos of him training with the Turkish club.
Mexican journalist Julio Rodríguez took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share more updates. He also reports the Hammers man is close to regaining full fitness and featuring for the Turkish club.
According to Rodríguez, the expectation is for the former Ajax man to play in around two weeks.
Mexico expect to have no further problems with his recovery so that he can make it to Javier Aguirre’s squad for the World Cup.
Hammers future needs sorting
Fenerbahçe have an option to make Edson Álvarez’s stay permanent after this season. As it stands, the clause is unlikely to be exercised considering his injury woes.
If the Istanbul club don’t retain him, he has to return to West Ham United, where he has a contract until 2028. Should that happen, Nuno Espírito Santo and his side will have to make a decision on the 28-year-old’s future.
