Yoane Wissa to leave Newcastle United? European giants could offer £55m man escape route

Newcastle United stumped up a hefty £55million to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford last summer.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce are reportedly interested in Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa.

Signed last summer for £55million, the 29-year-old has failed to hit the ground running at St James’ Park. Toon chiefs had a £25million bid rejected earlier in the window before paying more than double to get the deal done on deadline day.

Pushed into a corner due to Alexander Isak’s imminent exit, Newcastle signed Wissa - a proven Premier League goalscorer with 19 Premier League goals last season. However, the forward’s time on Tyneside has been marred by injury and fitness woes.

Wissa suffered a serious knee injury on international duty before he even trained in Newcastle colours. This ruled the No.9 out for almost three months - dealing a huge blow to Eddie Howe.

Since returning, Wissa has bagged just one Premier League goal, with Howe preferring to deploy Anthony Gordon up front. A telling moment came when the Congolese international remained as an unused substitute in both Champions League legs against Barcelona.

Eddie Howe challenges Yoane Wissa

Speaking to reporters last month, Howe insisted Wissa is as fit as he has been at Newcastle and challenged him to break into his side. The Toon boss said: "Yoane is fit, fitter probably than at any stage in his time with us. He's done a lot of work behind the scenes. He's making up for lost time in that respect and training with the group whenever we train.

"No injury concerns at all. The challenge for Yoane is when he’s introduced on the pitch, he's got to perform. And that'll be the same for every player. in the squad, and then I have to pick who I think is best for the job."

Turkish media claim Fenerbahce are keeping tabs on Wissa’s situation. As it stands, it is not thought that Newcastle are looking to sell the striker.

Given he signed a four-year contract less than 12 months ago, Wissa carries a significant figure on the balance sheet. Any cut-price deal is likely to be off the cards due to the potential PSR hit.

Ironically, a loan move would suit Newcastle better if they were to take a hit on Wissa. It is understood the Magpies are looking in the striker market this summer - placing an air of concern over Wissa’s future.

Nick Woltemade, Newcastle’s other big-money signing up front, has also struggled for form. While NewcastleWorld cannot confirm the Turkish reports, it would not be a surprise if he is moved on over the summer.
