The latest transfer talk from Sunderland after Regis Le Bris discussed the Black Cats' ambitions.
Sunderland were linked with a highly ambitious move for Monaco star Lamine Camara ahead of the January transfer window - and it now appears the highly-rated midfielder is edging closer to a move to the Premier League.
The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in Ligue 1 after impressing in the colours of Metz and Monaco in recent seasons - and it is with the latter where he has reportedly captured the attention of several clubs across European football. Despite links with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, Sunderland were said to have asked Monaco about a surprise deal earlier this season as they looked to pair Camara with Senegal international team-mate Habib Diarra at the Stadium of Light.
Camara was asked about speculation linking him with a move away from Monaco during the January transfer window and appeared to hint he would consider a transfer at the end of the season, rather than midway through the campaign.
Speaking to The Guardian in a wide-ranging interview in December, Camara said: “For now, I am really happy at Monaco. I feel really at ease here: the players are kind and ambitious, and I have a manager who trusts me. I follow the Premier League a lot – everyone does. I’m not thinking about changing clubs but we will see what happens at the end of the season.”
Although speculation linking Camara with a move to Wearside has quietened in recent months, the midfielder has still been mentioned as a possible target for Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea - but it is a rival even closer to home that are reportedly set to make a firm move for the Senegal star during the summer transfer window.
TeamTalk have reported Newcastle United are ‘more likely’ to secure a deal in the region of £55m to £64m after the Magpies ‘intensified’ their pursuit in recent weeks. Clubs in Spain and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen but Newcastle are viewed as ‘a more viable stepping stone’ if midfielder Sandro Tonali departs during the summer after the Italy international has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks.

Speaking on BBC Newcastle’s Total Sport earlier this week, the Black Cats boss said: “It's hard to say about the results in the future [and make guarantees], I think the most important is to stay consistent. I know as a fan, you want to react quickly about results because it's really emotional and it's fair to stay connected with your emotions. But after that, a project like Sunderland in the Premier League is a question of consistency, a question of vision as well. We want to become a strong club and consistent club in the top 10. I think that's really the objective, but it takes time. So we'll see if it's soon or something that happens later.”
