Newcastle United send official for €50m gem – Can seal deal for €15m in rare opportunity

Grêmio

Newcastle United’s growing transfer interest in Grêmio defender Viery comes at a time when the Brazilian side are still settling their defensive structure for the season.

The Premier League club have already sent a scout to watch the 21-year-old live. That visit came during the recent state championship final, where Viery again started and delivered a composed display.

His rise has been quick, and somewhat unexpected, and it’s caught Newcastle United transfer attention.

At the start of 2026, Viery was not seen as a guaranteed starter. However, injuries and inconsistency elsewhere in the squad opened the door. Since then, he has taken it firmly.

He has made 12 appearances this season and 24 in senior football. More importantly, he has become manager Luís Castro’s most trusted centre-back in recent weeks.

His profile explains why. Viery is left-footed, quick across the ground and comfortable defending in space. Those traits remain in short supply in the market, especially for defenders his age.

In addition, he shows composure in build-up, often playing vertical passes or switching play with longer diagonals. And that combination has drawn attention from Europe.

Why Newcastle United are paying transfer attention

Newcastle’s United transfer recruitment has consistently focused on young players with development potential and resale value, especially in Brazil. Viery fits that model.

Internally at Grêmio, there is also recognition that his skillset is hard to replace. Youth coach Airton Fagundes, who worked with Viery during his development, detailed the defender’s strengths to local outlet Zero Hora.

“He is a quick centre-back, with excellent recovery, strong sense of covering. He is also a defender who can build play. He finds passing situations inside, plays diagonal balls, long passes, and has a very good reading of the game, like few others. He is a projected centre-back, the type the market demands. His starting place is no surprise.”

That view is shared by others who followed his progress closely.

Former defender Luís Eduardo also highlighted a key factor behind the growing attention: “He is a boy with huge potential because he is a left-footed centre-back, which is a player that is hard to find in the market. He attracts a lot of attention because his timing is also very good.”

Still, he remains a developing player. Luís Eduardo pointed to areas that still need refinement: “With time, he will learn with maturity. There is the question of his positioning inside the box. Sometimes in one-on-one duels, but that is something you learn over time.”

Fagundes offered a similar assessment regarding the Newcastle United target’s development curve: “He just needs to control his intensity. But that is youth, and he will learn with time or with more games.”

Price set as reality meets release clause

Grêmio moved earlier this year to renew Viery’s contract until December 2029. As part of that deal, they set a €50m (£43m) release clause for foreign clubs.

That figure signals long-term belief. However, the club’s internal stance on a potential sale appears more flexible. Another Zero Hora report indicates Grêmio would consider offers in the region of €15m (£13m).

That gap reflects a common strategy in Brazil. The release clause protects the asset, while the asking price leaves room for negotiation.

For Newcastle United, this makes the situation clearer. There is still no indication of a formal bid. Yet with the player now established as a starter and a price effectively defined, the conditions for a move are beginning to take shape.

What happens next

Viery’s next few months will be crucial. If he continues to hold his place and perform in big matches, interest is likely to grow. Newcastle United’s previous scouting suggests they are already beyond an initial check.

The key question is timing. A move at €15m (£13m) would represent a relatively low-risk investment for a Premier League club. However, waiting could increase both competition and price.

For now, Grêmio remain in control. But they have also made it clear that Viery is no longer just a prospect – he is an asset with a defined market value.
