Brighton
St. Pauli could be in line for a nice boost this summer if Fabian Hürzeler gets the big move that he wants.
BILD report that the German club negotiated a sell-on clause with Brighton when Hürzeler joined Brighton in 2024. Reports are now linking him with a return to the Bundesliga this summer.
Bayer Leverkusen interest
A report this week stated that Bayern Leverkusen have Fabian Hürzeler on their list once again as they consider a managerial change in the summer.
The club is thinking of parting ways with Kasper Hjulmand this summer and Hürzeler is once again on their list. The German club wanted him when Xabi Alonso left, but they considered his release clause of around €20m too high.
That has now fallen and Hürzeler is considered more affordable this summer. The 33-year-old has even made it known behind the scenes he wants to leave Brighton this summer for a Champions League club.
That’s given Leverkusen hope they can get him this summer. Of course, they would have to qualify for the Champions League first.
St. Pauli benefit too
According to BILD, St. Pauli would also benefit from any move. They received around €5m from Brighton in 2024. That figure is their second most expensive sale ever.
But they also negotiated a sell-on clause in the transfer agreement with Brighton. If Leverkusen now sign Fabian Hürzeler, the Hamburg club will receive a share.
BILD say that a 10% clause is standard practice in such agreements. As an example, if Leverkusen pay €10m, St. Pauli will get another €1m from their former coach. They will certainly be keeping an eye on the situation around Hürzeler in the coming months.
Fabian Hürzeler Brighton exit believed to be likely
All signs seem to be pointing towards Fabian Hürzeler leaving Brighton at the end of the season.
Bayer Leverkusen appear happy to pay for him this time around, and he’s angling for a move to a bigger club as well. That’s two parts of the deal already done.
Now it remains to be seen what Brighton think. Pressure had been rising on them to make a change this season amid a disastrous run of form this season but Hürzeler has now turned that around.
The focus for now, will be on ending the season positively. But Leverkusen are lurking, and St. Pauli could be set to benefit if they pounce.
