Opinion: David Hopkinson's KNOX message is much-needed at Newcastle

One of the comments made by Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson after the club announced a training ground sponsor at long last is telling.

Indeed, the Newcastle United ownership have long been criticised by supporters for a lack of progress on commercial deals, but Hopkinson has landed his first.

Do you think PIF have lost interest in Newcastle United? 🤔

Earlier this week, the club confirmed that they had struck a deal with KNOX Hydration – a leading hydration brand – to rename the training ground.

From July 2026 onwards, the Newcastle United training ground will be called ‘The Knox’.

While these kinds of corporate partnerships lend themselves to all manner of buzzwords, a statement that Hopkinson gave to Newcastle United’s official website is interesting.

Hopkinson says Newcastle want to disrupt the status quo

Hopkinson said: “We are thrilled to welcome KNOX Hydration as a world-class partner. They share our relentless ambition to disrupt the status quo and reach the pinnacle of our respective industries. This isn’t just a branding exercise; it’s a performance-led partnership that will also support our community.

“As we integrate KNOX Hydration products into our daily environment at ‘The KNOX,’ we are giving our players the best possible tools to succeed, while driving the commercial growth necessary to compete at the very top. This is an exciting partnership for everybody at Newcastle United and KNOX, and we cannot wait to get started.”

That is interesting, given the PIF project has been accused of running out of steam. Clearly, it’s easy to say things like disrupting the status quo in a message full of corporate jargon, but it is at least an indication of their intent.

Newcastle have drifted into limbo over the last few months amid a lack of updates on any long-term plans about the club.

While more needs to happen over the coming weeks and months, this is a positive start at long last.

Newcastle United are making progress on the commercial front

According to Craig Hope, the deal to rename the training ground is worth less than £10million per year.

However, as Hope points out, every little helps as the club look to generate more revenue to push towards genuine success.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and various Premier League rules mean that Newcastle will have to move at glacial speed at times.

Still, there was a 44% increase in commercial revenue in the last set of published accounts and deals such as this one will no doubt help.

There’s still plenty to do but any progress feels significant right now.
