Jacob Murphy contract situation at Newcastle United now explained

**If there was any Newcastle United player who earned a pay rise last season, it was Jacob Murphy.**

Along with Joelinton, Jacob Murphy is the poster boy for what Eddie Howe has been able to achieve since taking over at Newcastle United.

The Brazilian and the ex-Norwich City winger have both become like completely different players under Howe’s guidance, and last season, [Murphy was, frankly, sensational.](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2025/04/08/this-is-incredible-from-jacob-murphy-more-proof-eddie-howe-is-working-wonders/)

Last season, Murphy scored nine goals and provided 17 assists, just two shy of media golden boy, Mo Salah. He formed an almost telepathic partnership with Alexander Isak, to the point where the meme in the summer was that Liverpool spent £125 million on a shiny new phone (Isak), but didn’t buy a charger (Murphy).

As discovered by [The Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/jacob-murphy-newcastle-united-contract-6536541), an official FA document has revealed that Murphy was given new contract terms in the summer after his phenomenal season.

While Murphy was given improved terms, the contract didn’t contain an extension, which means his deal is still set to expire in 2027. This is referred to as an ‘updated contract’ in the document.

Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, John Ruddy and Sven Botman were other Newcastle players handed ‘updated contracts’ in the same period.

With just 12 months remaining on his deal this summer, Newcastle will no doubt be contemplating Murphy’s future.

If they are thinking of letting him go, the summer and January will represent the last times they’ll be able to recoup any money from his sale, but as the club’s longest-serving player, they’re not going to miss out on much by keeping him another year and allowing him to leave on a free.

Murphy has been at Newcastle since 2017 and has been a fantastic servant to the club. A boyhood Newcastle fan, he’s not likely to want to leave either. Eddie Howe adores Murphy and he’s a huge presence in the dressing room, too, so we hope he sticks around a while longer.
