Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's record of six Premier League Player of the Month awards. Fernandes, 31, swept the vote after racking up two goals and four assists in four games across March.

The United captain beat six of his Premier League colleagues to win the award, namely James Garner, Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Gordon, Alex Iwobi, David Raya and Danny Welbeck. His form has helped cement Michael Carrick's side in the top five, as they bid to qualify for the Champions League.

Only three players - Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Mo Salah - have won the Premier League POTM award more times than Fernandes. Ronaldo, meanwhile, won his sixth award in April 2022 during his second spell at United.

His extraordinary longevity and legendary status at Old Trafford is partly why Fernandes continues to be inspired by his compatriot. Asked who he looks up to in an interview on the club's website, the midfielder replied: "Cristiano is an easy one for me.

"He is Portuguese and everyone from 2000 - I was born in 1994 - from that age upwards, everyone was looking at him and seeing him. He won the Ballon d'Or with the club, which was something very special.

"All the fans here, when he came back, will never forget that day, when he comes back against Newcastle. It was an unforgettable day.

"He comes back, scores two goals and looks like he never left and everything. The atmosphere in the stadium was crazy that day, probably the best one I have experienced.

"Just the fact of Cristiano coming back, not the rest, but what was created around that, him getting into the pitch, the way he was presented, everything gives goosebumps still to me."

Ronaldo and Fernandes will be looking to lift the World Cup together this summer. For now, though, the latter's priority is on United's Premier League ambitions.

The Red Devils don't play again until Monday, April 13 when they host Leeds United. The following Saturday, Carrick and Co. travel to Chelsea for a crunch game before another Monday night home match against Brentford.
