Callum Wilson contract uncertainty hides bigger crisis at West Ham United

Several weeks ago, the telegraph.co.uk claimed Callum Wilson had agreed, and put pen and paper to a new deal at London Stadium after a successful ‘pay to play’ initial spell at West Ham.

He’d proved he could stay fit and add value to West Ham’s attack so, to the hierarchy, it appeared sensible to nail him down to another year rather than see him head to Dubai or worse, to a Premier League competitor: That’s how it was written.

However, as we reported in late March, no such contract had been signed. It appears the Telegraph may have been mistaken….And so to today: Much the same thing is reported with Hammers.news exclusive, claiming:

“West Ham stay tight-lipped as seriously strange Callum Wilson twist emerges”

In essence, they confirm Wilson’s deal is not yet hammered out and their source, being all coy confirming only: ‘ All players’ contract details are confidential sorry,’.

The reality of Callum Wilson’s status hides a bigger, stark predicament. As our own transfer source put it when we spoke to him last month regarding the Telegraph’s claim:

‘Total cr*p:* *They can’t offer anyone a contract [..as] they don’t know what league they’ll be in”:

Why does this matter? Because it is equally true for every single West Ham player approaching the end of their contract right now. Of which there are several.

Relegation battle first – contracts later is the brutal reality of West Ham’s ‘predicament’ or ‘paralysis’ depending on your viewpoint.

It also means that, more than likely, summer recruitment and player disposal planning is ‘paused’, pending the same outcome: But I’ll bet there are two lists of names in someone’s little black book already, depending on where West Ham are performing next season.

Until then – nothing to see here. Literally.
