Jude Bellingham labels Newcastle United defender Dan Burn as 'Burninho' on social media

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn did not see much action for England over the international break, but has still done enough to earn quite the nickname from a certain Jude Bellingham.

While Burn is expected to be part of England’s 2026 World Cup squad, the defender did not get many minutes as the Three Lions lost to Japan earlier this week.

Having been rested for the draw with Uruguay, Burn played only a few minutes in the loss at Wembley.

Still, he has been a fixture of the England camps under Thomas Tuchel, and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has clearly been impressed.

Bellingham calls Burn ‘Burninho’

As the international break was drawing to a close, Burn posted a collage of images from the Japan game as well as some pictures from training sessions on Instagram.

Bellingham, who has played alongside Burn for a total of 264 minutes across three games, responded with “Burninho.”

That is perhaps a reflection on how Burn is seen by his peers in the England squad, even if giving him the name of a silky Brazilian defender is something of a joke.

Though clearly not the most fashionable name and a player in reasonably poor form for Newcastle United, Tuchel is a big fan of working with Burn.

As such, he is currently expected to go to the United States as England look to win the biggest prize in the game.

I know it sounds like sour grapes, but I’d take the money and run 😡

While it’s difficult to imagine Burn getting much game time given the likes of Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi and John Stones are also seemingly set to go, the Newcastle star can still perform a key role.

Tournaments are a squad game and having a player with such leadership skills in reserve can only be a good thing.

Indeed, in tight games, perhaps a player of Burn’s profile could also help his country from set-pieces if and when he does actually take to the field.
