Everything Mohamed Salah has said about his Liverpool departure plan:
Official Confirmation of Departure: On March 24, 2026, Mohamed Salah released an emotional video on social media confirming that the current 2025/26 campaign will be his final one at Liverpool. He stated that "the day has come" for his farewell and that he will be moving on after nine seasons with the club.
Mutual Agreement to Shorten Contract: Although Salah had signed a contract extension in April 2025 that was intended to run until 2027, he reached a mutual agreement with Liverpool to terminate the deal one year early. This arrangement allows him to leave as a free agent in June 2026 as a gesture of "good faith" from the club for his years of service.
Desire for Transparency with Fans: Salah emphasised that he wanted to make the announcement as early as possible to provide full transparency to the supporters. He expressed a deep respect for the fans and wanted to avoid a summer of speculation by clarifying his future before the season ended.
Emotional Reflections on Anfield: In his farewell message, Salah described Liverpool as more than just a football club, calling it a "passion, history, and spirit." He noted that he never imagined how deeply the city and its people would become a part of his life over the last decade.
Focus on a Strong Finish: Despite the exit announcement, Salah has reiterated that his immediate priority is finishing the season on a high note with the squad. He remains committed to helping the team secure the best possible finish in the Premier League and domestic cup competitions before his final match.
The Saudi Pro League Link: Saudi Arabian clubs, particularly Al Ittihad, remain the strongest contenders for his signature as they have pursued him since 2023. Salah is viewed as the ultimate target for the league due to his status as the premier sporting icon in the Middle East.
Major League Soccer (MLS) and Roma: Salah has also been linked with a move to the MLS, which has a number of high-profile players involved, including Lionel Messi. Italian outfit Gazetta dello Sport have also claimed the Egyptian is considering a move back to Roma, the club from which he joined Liverpool, although the financial aspect of any deal makes that unlikely.
Agent's Stance on the Next Move: Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, has been vocal on social media, warning fans and media to "beware of attention seekers" claiming to know the player's next move. He stated as recently as late March 2026 that no final decision has been made and "no one else knows" where Salah will play next.
Timing of the Final Decision: It is expected that Salah will wait until the end of the European season in May 2026 before formally signing with a new team. This timeline allows him to focus on his final games at Anfield, with his last match likely being against Brentford on May 24, 2026.
Mohamed Salah's message to Liverpool fans in full: "Hello everyone, unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club.
"We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates past and present.
"And to the fans, I don't have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest times. It's something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.
"Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and to my family.
"Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."
