Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool expect 'final decision soon' as new 'contacts expected this month'

Liverpool have scheduled fresh talks with Ibrahima Konate over extending his contract before its 30 June 2026 expiry date.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool continue in their attempts to tie the Frenchman down to a new deal before his contract expires at the end of the season.

He also reports on Real Madrid’s interest in the centre-back.

Romano told Caught Offside: “Liverpool remain in active conversations with Ibrahima Konate and his camp over a new contract.

“There are discussions ongoing with the French defender. At the moment there’s still nothing done or agreed, but the conversations are still underway.

“From Real Madrid at the moment, what I can say is that Real Madrid, a few months ago, before Christmas, informed Liverpool that they were not advancing on a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate.

“But Real Madrid keep following centre-backs on the market because David Alaba is expected to leave the club in the summer, and so they could add one more at centre-back position.”

Real Madrid rate Konate highly but do not have active interest

Romano went on to report that while Konate is a player of interest to Madrid, they are not actively pursuing him which will no doubt feature in Liverpool’s contract negotiations with the 26-year-old.

The journalist reports: “At the moment, with Konate there is nothing advanced with Real Madrid, nothing really concrete into it. With Liverpool, the conversation is continuing and let’s see if they can find a financial agreement.

“The player is open to continuing at Liverpool, but obviously it’s an important contract for his career, and so the conversation is going to continue with new contacts expected this month in April to take a final decision as soon as possible on the future of Ibrahima Konate regarding a potential move or a new contract.”

This season has been a challening one for all involved at Liverpool, but it has been particuarly tought for Konate.

Not only did he have to contend with the trauma of losing Diogo Jota, a close friend and teammate, he also lost his father. Amid all this personal angst, he has also endured a challenging time in terms of form.

He, much like others at Liverpool, may be keen to see the season end, but hopefully it will not be his last at the club as he is still one of the best defenders in Europe.
