“Better than them..” – Jarrod Bowen delivers early West Ham v Leeds United verdict

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen is under no illusions that an FA Cup quarter-final against Leeds United will be a tough game.

Leeds are back in action this weekend as FA Cup quarter-finals take place, with United heading down to East London to take on relegation rivals West Ham.

Both sides are in similar positions. You’d imagine both sets of fans would bite your hands off for survival right now, but the chance of getting to Wembley is simply one both clubs have to be going for.

Jarrod Bowen previews West Ham v Leeds United with fanbase comparison

As a Leeds fan, I don’t think it’s as black and white as thinking we either have to go for the FA Cup or survival in the Premier League. There’s enough room this season to prioritise both, given our break until the next league game.

West Ham will no doubt be thinking the same. The intrinsic benefit of getting to Wembley, lifting the fanbase and squad while also getting that psychological advantage over a relegation rival, is crucial.

Irons captain Jarrod Bowen is under no illusions that facing Leeds in a likewise position to themselves makes it a tricky cup tie.

“As a club, they’ve got a similar fanbase to us – loyal, passionate – who will want a day out at Wembley, too,” Bowen told the West Ham site. “So they’re going to be right up for it, and we have to match that and be better than them in every single sense.”

Can Leeds United seal trip to Wembley by beating West Ham in FA Cup?

Of course, the club’s priority is staying in the division. But, I don’t think that we should be taking this game lightly at all.

Every fan wants a win in this game so that we can get that trip to Wembley and dream of FA Cup success, like Crystal Palace last season.

Winning should give us that lift in the league too. It could shake off our London curse, and prove we’ve got what it takes to fire our way to survival, over the Irons in particular.
