Dominik Szoboszlai admits “mentality wasn’t there” – then sparks outrage with fan gesture

Dominik Szoboszlai admitted that “the fighting spirit wasn’t there enough” for Liverpool in their rout at Man City, but then prompted fan fury with his reaction to the away end.

When asked what was missing in the 4-0 defeat by TNT Sports, Szoboszlai admitted: “The fighting spirit wasn’t there enough, the mentality wasn’t there enough.

“None of us were there, to be honest, as much as we could.”

It is a damning verdict for a side whose silverware hopes largely rested on their success at the Etihad, but crumbled after the first sign of adversity.

“It’s a hard time, but we have to stick together,” Szoboszlai added. “On Wednesday there is another chance, but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end.”

Szoboszlai, who has been tipped among some to be a future captain, was also later on the receiving end of fans’ ire after his gestures towards the sparse away end at the end of the match.

The No. 8 clapped towards the remaining away fans, who had started leaving with 30 minutes left in the match, before shrugging his shoulders and raising both arms as if to urge a response.

Federico Chiesa walked over and guided him away, smartly so.

Szoboszlai giving it loads to the away end then ??? the absolute cheek of the cunt. This is the biggest group of fucking cowards and pricks the game has ever seen!!! Massive issues throughout the club. He’s fucking massively overrated too btw, very limited and a fucking blert

Listen I love Dom, think he’s been our best player this season by a mile. But doing that when these fans pay a lot a money to watch Liverpool home and away is out of order. These fans have had enough of watching this shit week in week out. https://t.co/r8dPgicl2C

You can only hope he was actually gesticulating to the City fans, who sat below the Liverpool supporters, but the video suggests otherwise, considering he is looking towards the upper levels.

It is damning when you consider he admitted that he and his teammates did not show enough fighting spirit, which is the minimum expected by supporters when donning the badge.

How about we direct this frustration to where it can be changed, rather than to the supporters who dedicate their time and money to supporting the team across the country and throughout Europe?

“We have to forget as much as we can and as soon as we can, and just keep on fighting all the time,” Szoboszlai said of the need to bounce back at PSG.

“I always say when we do it and we are winning, when we don’t do it we are losing. You have to fight, work hard, be there for each other and that’s what we are missing sometimes.”

The disconnect between the head coach, players and supporters is growing at an alarming rate, and yet there seems no urgency for that to change from the inner sanctum.
