Dominik Szoboszlai labels a lack of fighting spirit and mentality as reason behind Manchester City defeat

Liverpool were dealt another damaging blow in what has already been an incredibly difficult season for them on Saturday afternoon.

Despite starting the game well, Manchester City opened the scoring from the penalty spot through Erling Haaland and the Reds had no answer.

Defined in previous seasons by the ideas of intensity and a never give up attitude, Liverpool did not execute those ideologies this afternoon as they looked unable to come up with any sort of response.

Arne Slot described the result as “very disappointing” and midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has now given his thoughts on what happened today.

Following the game, Dominik Szoboszlai was quick to direct blame inwards as he declared that a lack of fighting spirit and a lack of mentality from the players led to such a defeat.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I don’t know. When you do something and there is no result for it, it makes no sense. We had chances and missed them; we conceded an easy penalty. We lose 4-0. We cannot concede as much as we concede. Nothing else to say.”

“The fighting spirit wasn’t there enough; the mentality wasn’t there enough. None of us were there to be honest as much as we could.”

“It’s a hard time but we have to stick together. On Wednesday there is another chance, but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end.”

It will be seen as disastrous if Liverpool end this season trophyless after the euphoria of last year’s campaign.

With the dream of lifting the FA Cup evaporating, all eyes will be set on the Champions League and what Liverpool can do in that competition.

However, they face arguably the toughest test they could’ve got in PSG as the reigning European champions look to go all the way once again.

It isn’t just Arne Slot who will be hoping Dominik Szoboszlai’s comments today spark a reaction on Wednesday as a departing Mohamed Salah will surely want to end his last season in Red on a high.

The Egyptian’s penalty miss topped off an embarrassing afternoon for Liverpool against Manchester City and he will be looking to put that far behind him with a solid performance against PSG on Wednesday.
