£4m star was becoming the new Summerville at Leeds, now he looks finished under Farke - opinion

Over the last couple of campaigns, Leeds United supporters have been truly blessed to witness a collection of incredible attacking talents at Elland Road.

Whether it be in the Championship or the Premier League, numerous players have stepped up to the plate to deliver in Yorkshire when the team has needed them most.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been the Whites’ talisman throughout the ongoing season, as seen by his tally of 10 goals within his 28 appearances to date.

The 29-year-old’s contributions have certainly steered Daniel Farke’s side away from the drop zone and handed them a fighting chance of securing survival.

However, he will likely have a fair distance to go before he captures the hearts of the fanbase - just as one player did during his own time in the first-team.

The stats behind Crysencio Summerville’s success at Leeds

Back in 2021, Leeds secured the signature of winger Crysencio Summerville from Dutch side Feyenoord, with the youngster originally linking up with the academy setup.

However, it quickly became apparent that the Whites had a serious talent on their hands, as he linked up with the senior team ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He was unable to prevent relegation back to the Championship, but the club’s drop into the second tier proved to be a blessing in disguise for the 24-year-old’s career.

Summerville would feature a total of 49 times throughout the 2023/24 campaign, amassing a staggering 31 combined goals and assists across all competitions.

As a result, he registered the third most goal contributions of any player in the division, even claiming the EFL’s Player of the Year award in the process.

However, it wouldn’t be enough to secure the Whites an immediate return to the Premier League, which unfortunately spelt the end of his career at Elland Road.

Summerville’s goals and assists saw Leeds fall just short in the play-offs, with the 1-0 defeat to Southampton confining the club to another year in the second tier.

As a result, the Dutchman would depart for pastures new, subsequently joining West Ham United in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth a reported £25m before add-ons.

Leeds United's most expensive sales of all time

A look at the record departures from Elland Road.

The departure was a bitter blow for the Whites and Farke, with his move away leaving a huge hole in the club’s attack and denting their attempts of securing promotion.

Numerous players were forced to share the responsibility of providing the goods in the 2024/25 campaign - the season in which the club managed to win the title.

Winger Wilfried Gnonto was just one of the players handed an increased responsibility in the senior ranks, subsequently being the player to feature in Summerville’s vacated position.

The Italian racked up 43 league appearances last term, registering 15 combined goals and assists - the third most of any player within Farke’s senior ranks.

After promotion, many expected the 22-year-old to be rewarded with a key role in the starting eleven, but it’s safe to say this season has been a year of struggle for the youngster.

He’s featured in just 16 league games to date, but only four of which have come from a starting role - with Farke evidently not seeing the winger as a key member of the squad.

Gnonto has only racked up a total of 380 minutes played at present, with the winger no doubt being a victim of the club’s switch to a more conservative three-back system.

Many fans have been crying out for the £4m man to be installed back into the starting eleven in recent weeks, but the manager continues to give the Italian the cold shoulder.

He’s been an unused substitute in each of the Whites' last two Premier League outings, whilst only being utilised in five league games since the turn of the year.

The likes of Dan James, Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor are all seemingly ahead of Gnonto in the pecking order - a decision which has left many baffled.

Given his lack of action in recent months, it would be a surprise to no one to see the forward moved on in the summer to help raise key funds for added reinforcements.

However, any deal would likely be a huge mistake on the board’s part, with the 22-year-old having bags of quality and potential to still make an impact at Elland Road.

It truly is a sorry sight to see for supporters in Yorkshire, especially considering the levels produced by the youngster during the promotion-winning campaign.

Ultimately, if the manager no longer sees a player as a key member of the squad, an exit could prove to be the only option - regardless of how unpopular such a move would be.
