Liverpool are waiting for a response from Ibrahima Konate on their latest contract offer, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Frenchman, who has been capped 27 times by his country, is inside the final three months of his current deal.

However, Plettenberg claims a new proposal is “on the table”, and there is optimism that Konate will still stay at Anfield.

Other clubs have registered their interest, but it does seem as if the chances of the centre-back remaining with the Reds are quite high.

Why has it taken so long for Konate to sign on the dotted line?

The 26-year-old is said to be unhappy with the salary he is being offered. Depending on what report you read, he is earning either £70,000 a week or £150,000 a week, and he wants a substantial pay rise.

For their part, Liverpool are mindful of the fact that the club’s wage bill has skyrocketed in recent seasons, and they are keen to keep costs down.

It means that negotiations between the current Premier League champions and Konate’s agent have been painfully slow. Plettenberg’s update may suggest there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Other Liverpool players have been in the same boat

Last season, captain Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah both signed contract extensions in April, so while no fan likes these negotiations being strung out, there is past precedent for a successful resolution at such a late stage.

Konate has had a poor season by his standards, but allowing a top defender to leave on a free when he is about to hit his prime would be a very poor decision. If a contract can be agreed, it would suit all parties.
