Merlin Rohl opened up on his pride at playing for Everton in a thoughtful post shared on social media.
The midfielder, who joined on loan from Freiburg in the summer, said he “cherished” the chances he was being given and described the Blues as a “great club”.
His words, written on Instagram, come with the 23-year-old potentiallyjust days away from having his future confirmed. He will officially become an Everton player when the club avoids relegation from the Premier League, a feat that could be confirmed as early as next weekend.

Rohl, writing while sharing a collection of images from Hill Dickinson Stadium that included portraits of supporters, stewards and pictures of himself in action, said: “Coincidence and luck define our lives in so many ways. I am so grateful for the coincidences and the luck that have allowed me to play in this beautiful stadium. For this great club. In front of the eyes of our passionate fans. In the best league in the world.”
Rohl signed from the Bundesliga in the final hours of the transfer window, initially on loan. The deal featured an obligation for the move to become permanent should Everton avoid relegation. It is understood the Blues’ survival will trigger the deal for a fee of around £18m.
The Germany youth international has struggled for minutes since his arrival, partly due to a series of injuries that set him back towards the end of last year. Good performances in away wins at Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have provided glimpses of his talent, though, and Moyes introduced him from the bench in the win over Chelsea before the international break.
Rohl’s message continued: “So many things that I could not control, and yet here I stand, living my dream of playing in the Premier League. I know what a privilege that is and how many people never had or still don’t have the opportunities, due to physical circumstances, difficult family situations or bad luck at the wrong moment. Coincidence can also take a great deal away from you.
“I cherish this opportunity and have so much respect for everyone who has had to overcome truly difficult obstacles and has experienced strokes of fate. The different starting points in life that people have make me incredibly thoughtful.
“I hope that in an age full of greed and envy, shaped by wars and a growing gap between rich and poor, we can once again focus more on community. And together find solutions for how we can give as many people as possible the chance to live a fulfilling life and to pursue their dreams.”
