'Gutted': West Ham star apologises to fans after heartbreaking defeat to Leeds

Jarrod Bowen has apologised to West Ham supporters after their penalty shootout defeat to Leeds.

Bowen was integral to the Hammers’ comeback from two goals down, but it was not enough for them to win the tie.

Unfortunately, his penalty miss is one of the reasons West Ham will not be heading to Wembley later this month.

Jarrod Bowen sends apology to West Ham fans after penalty miss vs Leeds

Although Adama Traore was West Ham’s best player against Leeds, Jarrod Bowen also had an impactful game on Sunday.

The England international consistently looked dangerous and was unlucky not to score one of his long-range strikes.

Despite not scoring, Bowen can be pleased with his performance, helping the Hammers come back from 2-0 down in normal time.

However, his most memorable moment of the game was his opening penalty miss in the shootout after extra time.

After Finlay Herrick had saved Leeds’ first effort, Bowen needed to score to keep the momentum on West Ham’s side.

Instead, Bowen’s weak effort had neither the power nor the accuracy needed to beat Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri.

But is Nuno getting the most out of him?

Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United celebrates after scoring the team's first goal during the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round match between West Ham United and Brentford at the London Stadium in Stratford, England, on March 9, 2026.

Pablo was the only other West Ham player to miss a spot-kick, as the visitors won 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

Bowen was understandably heartbroken by his costly mistake, which denied his team a trip to Wembley.

“Gutted. It hurts a lot after being 2-0 down. I missed, and I can only apologise to everyone involved for that,” he told TNT Sports.

“You never want to miss penalties, but I have today, and I have to face that. It doesn’t define who I am, but I have to stand tall from that. We did a lot of good things in the game, but it wasn’t to be.”

Meanwhile, Bowen also reflected on West Ham’s need to bounce back from this setback against Wolves on Friday.

“It has to hurt,” he added. “We are hurt as a team. We have to dust ourselves down and get back into training tomorrow for the Wolves game on Friday because we know what we have to do.”
