Decision soon: Liverpool will soon learn if they will be able to sign£30m defender

Liverpool-linked defender Nico Schlotterbeck has confirmed that a decision on his future is approaching, with the Borussia Dortmund centre-back yet to commit to a new contract.

Recent reports in Germany suggested Schlotterbeck had already agreed fresh terms with Dortmund, a development that would have ended Liverpool’s hopes of landing the 26-year-old.

However, the defender has since made it clear that nothing has been finalised.

Speaking after Dortmund’s recent victory, Schlotterbeck revealed he has held talks with club officials but insisted that discussions remain ongoing and no agreement has been reached.

The Germany international explained that he has spoken directly with Dortmund’s hierarchy to better understand their plans, adding that negotiations will continue in the coming days before he makes a final call on his future. He also admitted that staying in Dortmund remains a possibility, but stressed that all aspects of the deal must feel right before he signs anything.

“I wanted to defend myself. I didn’t want to have a go at the BVB fans,” Schlotterbeck said. “I spoke with the club this week. I wanted to hear [Dortmund sporting director] Ole’s point of view and how he approaches things.”

Decision expected soon as door remains open: Liverpool defensive plans could hinge on Schlotterbeck outcome

Liverpool are expected to reassess their defensive options this summer, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konate and the need to strengthen depth at centre-back.

Schlotterbeck’s current contract runs until 2027, meaning Dortmund remain in a strong position, but a new extension would almost certainly end hopes of a summer move.

Reports from Germany suggest he could be available for around £30m if talks fail to result in a renewal, making him an appealing option for clubs looking to strengthen defensively.

Dortmund manager Niko Kovac calmed the situatuon by saying Schlotterbeck has every right to defend himself after false reports in the press.

Kovac said: “He has the right to clarify things. He hasn’t done anything wrong. The club have said everything. The mention of Sebastian Kehl’s name was unfortunate – coincidental.

“Now he is speaking with Ole. I remain positive. He is a really good player, one we all love. I do too.”

Liverpool have been monitoring the situation closely, viewing the left-footed centre-back as a potential solution if defensive changes are required ahead of next season.

While Dortmund remain hopeful of tying Schlotterbeck down to a new long-term deal, the player himself has kept all options open.

His latest comments suggest a decision is imminent, with talks ongoing and a conclusion expected sooner rather than later.

Until that happens, however, Liverpool and other interested clubs remain firmly in the race, waiting to see whether the defender commits his future in Germany or leaves the door open for a summer transfer.
