Sensational return: 'Strong rumour 'that Jurgen Klopp is 'waiting on Liverpool phone call'

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly the subject of strong rumours suggesting he could be open to a sensational return to Anfield if the club makes contact.

The claim comes from former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, who revealed that talk of Klopp potentially returning to Liverpool is circulating widely within his circles.

On Sunday, Football Insider shared an article titled: “Jurgen Klopp waiting on Liverpool phone call – ‘it’s a strong rumour in my network.”

Wyness admitted the idea may sound unlikely, but insisted the rumours are being discussed seriously within his network.

Klopp’s Anfield return described as ‘dream scenario’ for Liverpool supporters

Klopp stepped down from his role as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2023/24 season after nearly nine years in charge, leaving behind a legacy that included multiple major trophies and a transformative period for the club.

According to Wyness, the notion of Klopp returning has been framed as a romantic possibility; one that would energise supporters if the circumstances made it possible. However, he suggested the idea still feels somewhat fanciful despite the persistent rumours.

He told the ‘Inside Track’ podcast: “There was one interesting thought the other day that somebody gave me was to say that there’s Bonnie Prince Jurgen is waiting across the water to come back and reclaim his throne.

“Now, to me, that’s a little bit fanciful, but you never know. In football, we never know. And there is that rumour strongly circulating in my network and that could be the case.

“Now, Xabi Alonso, to me, is still the favourite to take over. I think the dream of Jurgen coming back is a bit of a big dream, but it would obviously be the go-to fantastic solution that would perk the Liverpool fans up.

“They’re going to have to get used to Xabi Alonso and I do think that will be the move that will be made.”

Xabi Alonso still viewed as the leading candidate to replace Slot

For now, talk of Klopp waiting for a phone call remains firmly in the realm of rumour, but there would certainly be very few Liverpool fans in opposition to the idea.

Xabi Alonso remains the favourite to replace Slot should FSG finally take the decision to sack Slot.

The 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday is the latest blow to Slot’s hopes of retaining his job into next season. It is now untenable for Liverpool to keep him.

FSG have been taking risk after risk by keeping him. Since the New Year, it has been blow after blow, and should Liverpool be eliminated from the Champions League by PSG for the second season running, it will take supporter angst to new heights.
