Former Newcastle United transfer target agrees terms with La Liga giants

Fabrizio Romano has claimed a former Newcastle United target has agreed terms with a La Liga club.

Former Newcastle United transfer target Ederson is reportedly set to join La Liga giants Atletico Madrid as he approaches the final months of his current contract at Atalanta.

The three-times capped Brazil international has been linked with a move to Tyneside on a number of occasions in recent seasons and the Magpies are believed to have monitored his progress during that time. There is no indication if there were plans for a move for the highly-rated midfielder during the upcoming summer transfer window - but Newcastle could need to boost their midfield options after Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock were both linked with moves away from St James Park.

Tonali’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks after several comments from the Italy international’s agent amid links with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. As reported by The Gazette recently, Tonali’s representatives believe they have a gentleman’s agreement with the Magpies that will allow the former AC Milan star to leave the club if Eddie Howe’s side are unsuccessful in their bid to secure European football for a third time in fourth seasons.

Willock has also been linked with a move away from Tyneside and Crystal Palace were suggested as a possible suitor for the former Arsenal man during the January transfer window. Willock will enter the final year of his current Magpies deal this summer and that means he could be allowed to move on and avoid the risk of losing the 26-year-old on a free transfer at the end of next season.

It appears any hopes of landing Ederson as a possible replacement for either player have already been dashed after Fabrizio Romano claimed the Atalanta star has verbally agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid - although also revealed there is no agreement between the two clubs.

The Italian journalist posted an update on his social media outlets given a major update on a player Newcastle have watched on several occasions in recent seasons. Romano said: “Atlético Madrid have verbally agreed on personal terms with Éderson as Atalanta midfielder is a top target. No agreement yet between clubs as talks continue around €35/40m fee but still in negotiations. Éderson, out of contract in June 27.”
