Yasir Al-Rumayyan message to Newcastle United - Hint dropped on Eddie Howe’s future

The Public Investment Fund are well aware of how important European qualification is to Newcastle United’s progression.

Newcastle United are under no illusion that European football was a prime target for the 2025-26 season.

As it stands, the Magpies sit 12th in the Premier League with seven games remaining. The importance of competing on the continent was laid bare when the club’s accounts were published last week.

Newcastle made a record profit but, upon closer inspection, the sale of St James’ Park to a separate PIF-owned entity proved a cunning loophole to avoid a potential points deduction. Toon chiefs are also expected to post unprecedented figures next year due to Champions League football and Alexander Isak’s exit.

Newcastle United target no secret

It is no secret that Newcastle’s target for the current campaign was European qualification. Toon CEO David Hopkinson made it clear to reporters last week that Newcastle’s goals for the season have not changed.

This has come from the top of the club, with PIF well aware of the need to keep the ball rolling in Europe. While not stated explicitly, The Gazette understands Newcastle are not overly keen on playing Conference League football.

Doing so would force the Magpies to comply with UEFA’s strict 70 per cent squad-cost-ratio regulations for little financial reward. For Premier League sides not competing abroad, there is an 85 per cent leeway.

David Hopkinson on Eddie Howe future

Eyebrows were raised when Hopkinson refused to commit to Eddie Howe’s long-term future. Just weeks earlier on talkSPORT, the Canadian could not have been any more robust in his backing for the Toon boss.

Hopkinson and new sporting director Ross Wilson understand the mitigating factors that have damaged Newcastle’s season. However, they are also aware that the buck stops with PIF when hiring and firing managers.

"I don't have a stance on his future,” Hopkinson told reporters. “What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt. We take it seriously. There's nothing within us that thinks 'well, it's just three points and on we go'. It has resonated.

"I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie (Howe) and we talked through a multitude of things, including that. Eddie's our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here and we'll talk about the future when it's time. Right now, we're focused on this season's competition."
