Noel in the Sky Blue
‘Nuddy’ in Sky Blue Action
On this day (6th April) in 1996 Big Ron’s Sky Blues overcame the mighty Liverpool with a sublime piece of acrobatic aerial finishing by CCFPA member Noel Whelan, a goal made by the ‘Bullet from Bulawayo’, Sky Blue star Peter Ndlovu (CCFPA’ our 300th recruit)! A great pic of ‘Snowy’ scoring via his telescopic right leg can be seen below right. Noel regularly comes back to see us as a ‘special guest’ over the years.
‘Snowy’ scored the only goal at Highfield Road in the eighteenth minute to get the Sky Blues their first victory in nearly three months and kick off yet another ‘great escape’. There were 23,037 present at the home of CCFC to see a fully committed performance from the Sky Blues. They had also come away from Anfield with a point the previous October in a goalless draw.
ImageThe Merseysiders were title contenders and, in fact, they finished third behind Newcastle United and champs Manchester United. The game was marred by the ‘Pool’s Steve Harkness breaking his leg in a challenge on the Sky Blues’ John Salako (also now a CCFPA member).
