'Pretty sure': Liverpool likely eyeing 'Luis Diaz-type' winger this summer but won't break the bank for him

Liverpool are likely to be keeping tabs on Anthony Gordon’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Reds are on the search for wide attacking players, with Gordon coming onto their radar in the past.

The Scouser has scored 17 goals for Newcastle this season, and with homegrown quotas potentially coming into consideration at Liverpool, journalist David Lynch says the Reds are likely to take a look at Gordon once again.

Would any Liverpool players realistically get into PSG’s starting XI?

Surely we've got no chance against them 😣

Liverpool won’t break the bank on Gordon

Speaking to Anfield Index on bank holiday Monday, Lynch outlined why Liverpool’s interest in Gordon could be reignited once again.

“He lays on goals as well [as scores them], if he was at Liverpool you’d like to think he’d be in a side that creates more chances, would be more dominant and that would suit him,” he said.

“Obviously, I think the price point would be the issue here, it depends how severe Newcastle’s PSR or SCR issue are coming into this summer. If he could be bagged for a reasonable fee then Liverpool might be all over him, but I don’t think it will be a deal they force through for 75 million and go through another Isak situation where they’re absolutely knocking down the door, because there is probably a limit on his value.”

Nevertheless, if he is available for a relatively good price, Lynch says he could see Liverpool at least entertaining the idea of signing the former Everton man.

“The homegrown thing is part of it, he’s a local lad, a Liverpool fan,” he said. “I think in a better team he’s shown he can have the quality to score goals and impact things and he’s a good age as well. I think he’s got the ability to be a Luis Diaz-type for Liverpool which they’ve definitely needed this season and he can also play right hand side, down the middle as well.

“But we’ll see, they liked him in the past, they turned down the opportunity to sign him a couple of summers ago, so will they go for it this time? I’m pretty sure he’ll maybe be on the shortlist, but whether he’s the one they’ll go for, we’ll see. Yan Diomande is another one they definitely like.”

Analysis: What is a fair price for Gordon?

Initially, with Gordon dropping out of the Newcastle team this season, there had been a feeling that the 25-year-old’s value may be starting to fall.

However, having since hit back with 17 goals, and once again become a starter for club and country, it feels unlikely that Liverpool could snare Gordon for less than £75m.

For that price, the Reds will probably feel that there are better options out there.

Should Gordon’s valuation drop to around £60-65m, though, maybe that will sway Liverpool to come back in for him.

As Lynch points out, there is enough evidence to suggest that the winger could go up a level if he joined the Reds, and his pace, threat from wide and nasty edge are all things Liverpool have been badly missing this season.

It appears that Gordon is not at the very top of Liverpool’s list this summer, but he should definitely be on it at the very least.
