Champions League Matchday Preview: Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich

Over the weekend, Bayern Munich staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory on the road against Freiburg. Bayern will need to be much sharper in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid. Bayern easily defeated Atalanta in the Round of 16 (6-1, 4-1) to advance to the quarterfinal stage for the 14th time out of the last 15 seasons (2019 was the lone exception).

Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mallorca, but that upset should be ignored by Bayern fans. Real Madrid smothered Manchester City with a 5-1 aggregate score to advance from the Round of 16. On the bright side, Real Madrid has lost three times at the Bernabéu this season.

Three things to know about Bayern

Three things to know about Real Madrid

Bayern draws 2-2. The remaining La Liga teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid) all pose unique problems to Bayern’s style of play, primarily in their counterattacking abilities. Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanišić will need to be more cautious in their forward runs. Both teams will hold and lose the lead, with Kylian Mbappé scoring first, Bayern answering with goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane, then Bayern conceding a late minute equalizer from a corner kick.
