'Get up!'- Former Portsmouth midfielder jokes about red-card tackle in game v Oxford that…

Conor Ogilvie’s red card in Pompey’s 2-2 draw with Oxford United has been deemed harsh by both former Pompey midfielder Tim Sherwood and ex-Oxford striker Jamie Mackie

Former Leeds United and Manchester City defender Danny Mills loved a tackle during his playing career.

The no-nonsense full-back, who also played 19 times for England, wasn’t shy when it came to locking horns with forwards and doing his utmost to stop them in their tracks.

It also saw 22-year-old Stanley Mills roll around on the turf in apparent agony as he sought to make the most Ogilvie’s eagerness to win back possession in front of the South Stand.

Sherwood and former Oxford forward Jamie Mackie, both of whom were on Sky Sports punditry duty for the huge game at the bottom of the Championshp table, were in agreement that the challenge warranted no more than a yellow card from the match official.

However, to emphasis his point further, Sherwood, who was part of the Pompey side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2002-03, quipped Mills snr would probably have produced worse tackles in their back garden when the U’s winger was growing up.

Sherwood and Mackie share red card verdicts

When asked for his opinion on the sending off decision during Sky Sports’ broadcast of the game, Sherwood said: ‘For me, I think it's not a red card.

‘I agree with Jamie. I think Stanley Mills has had a lot worse tackles than that from his dad in the garden growing up. And if he started rolling around on the floor like that, daddy would be like: “get up!”

Sharing his thoughts on the matter, Mackie said: ‘Yeah, I don't think it's a red card.

‘I'm not convinced the ref would have given it. I think the linesman on that side is quite close, and I think that quite early on they've communicated.

‘Look, it wasn't a great touch (originally by Ogilvie before the tackle) and he's obviously scrambling a little bit, and Stanley Mills is quick onto it.

‘Look, he's wrapped his leg around him, but I look and go: “the studs aren't really in play”.

‘I think it's not massively high. We know if he wrapped his leg around him and it's sort of like quad height (it’s a red). But it's quite low.

‘I don't think Oxford would have beeb gutted if it was just a yellow.’

At the end of the game, Pompey boss John Mousinho said the Blues woud be appealing against Smith’s decision.
