Prime example: Ashby gets captain's seal of approval on City return

The Newcastle loanee seized his chance after replacing Josh Neufville in yesterday’s win at Wycombe.

Ashby produced a killer pass leading to City’s equaliser and delivered an energy display on the right wing.

The January arrival had started only once before and had made just three sub appearances in over two months since.

Skipper Power revealed he has been trying to keep Ashby’s spirits up and other players who have not been featuring regularly.

“That was a squad win and the lads that have come into the team have done really well.

“Harrison's the prime example for me. I've spoken with him for months on end now, trying to keep him going.

“I know it's difficult when you're not playing but he's trained properly every day and he’s got his just rewards. It's probably took a little bit longer for him.”

Power knows how hard it can be stuck on the fringes. He found himself sidelined during a spell with Aarhus in Denmark.

“I think it's easier as you get older because you see situations,” he added. “That was like the last year I had in Denmark.

“I'm 31 years of age but that was probably the most I've learned about myself during a season. I was in a situation where younger lads were playing ahead of me and the club was on a path to sell players.

“I had to learn how to deal with that and become an all-round better squad person.

“I found it really difficult because I want to play but I channelled my energy into keeping fit and trying to help those lads. I think that's what I've tried to pass on.

“I've spoken with a lot of the lads outside of the team and I know how hard it is when you're not playing.

“I think that's where you look at Harrison and I hope that gives everyone a lift that if you do the right things at some point, the chance will come.

“Unfortunately, there are times, like with me last year, I found myself in a situation where no matter what I’ve done the situation didn’t change.

“But football changes quickly and it’s credit to Harrison’s persistence for putting in a top performance.”

City sealed the perfect Easter with second-half goals from Bobby Pointon and Aden Baldwin. That was despite going behind early on.

Power said: “In that moment, I imagine everyone around the country, not just everyone in the away end, thought ‘here we go again.’

“There were signs in the first half where I felt like if we upped our levels and believed we could win, we'd get something out of the game.

“I think we started the second half with a real intent and that was a Bradford City performance.

“We showed all facets of our game plan and the character really shone through.

“Wycombe are a team who've invested heavily in the summer. They are a club on the up and have been in the Championship in recent years.

“They were expected to be up there challenging so to beat them twice is a really good marker of how well we’ve done this season.”
