Sunderland U21s suffered late drama at Derby County and must now wait to discover if they have secured a Premier League 2 play-off spot
Sunderland U21s face an anxious wait to discover their play-off fate after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Derby County brought their regular Premier League 2 campaign to a close.
Graeme Murty’s side looked on course to secure their place in the end-of-season knockout stages after taking a first-half lead, but a second-half turnaround - and a missed stoppage-time penalty - leaves their hopes hanging in the balance. Sunderland currently sit 14th on 28 points and must now wait on other results to determine whether they finish inside the top 16.
There was early encouragement for the young Black Cats, who started brightly at Pride Park. Harrison Jones fired narrowly wide from distance before Finn Geragusian tested the Derby goalkeeper, while Jack Whittaker also went close after being picked out at the back post.
Sunderland’s pressure told just after the half-hour mark, when Harrison Jones produced a moment of quality, curling a superb free-kick into the top corner from around 20 yards to give the visitors a deserved lead. They almost doubled their advantage before the break, with Whittaker again involved as his low delivery found Jaydon Jones, but the forward could only lift his effort over the bar.
However, the momentum shifted after the restart. Derby were awarded a penalty when Archie Lightfoot was adjudged to have fouled inside the box, and Justin Oguntolu made no mistake from the spot to level the scores. Murty’s side responded well and were unfortunate not to regain the lead, with Geragusian striking the post and further efforts going close. But the decisive moment came late on, when a defensive lapse allowed Johnson Osong to pounce and fire Derby ahead.
There was still time for late drama. Sunderland were handed a golden opportunity to salvage a point when they were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time, but Marcus Neill fired his effort over the crossbar to compound a frustrating evening.
With the top 16 progressing into the Premier League 2 play-offs, those fixtures are contested as one-off ties, beginning with a round of 16 and culminating in a final. Sunderland must now wait to see if their points tally is enough to extend their season, with their play-off hopes no longer in their own hands.
