Middlesbrough star 'distraught' after injury blow but positive update on key man

But there was better news on the injury front, with Hellberg hoping Matt Targett will be fit to return for Saturday's game against Portsmouth.

But that game might come too soon for Hayden Hackney, Morgan Whittaker and Leo Castledine, with Hellberg admitting at the end of last week that the trio could be out for a fortnight.

It was too early for Hellberg to know the severity of Bangura's latest blow after the left-back lasted just 34 minutes at Swansea.

Bangura's time on Teesside has been plagued by injuries, with several setbacks preventing the defender from ever getting the opportunity to have a lengthy run in the side.

After missing the entirety of last season through injury, Bangura spent the early months of the current campaign out of the picture under Rob Edwards.

He featured in eight of Hellberg's first nine games in charge but was then sidelined for two months through injury. After his return, he was handed a place in the starting XI at Swansea and scored Boro's opener before conceding a penalty. And just over 10 minutes before the break he was forced off.

Hellberg said: “It’s too early to say [how serious the injury is] but of course he is distraught.

"You go out after being injured, you go back and do those 25 minutes, you're looking like a Roberto Carlos left-back again and it’s tough. I feel very sorry for him. He’s a brilliant boy and a brilliant footballer. Hopefully it’s not that bad.”

Targett missed Monday's game after picking up an injury against Millwall, but Hellberg hopes to have the defender available again this weekend.

He said: “He missed out because of the injury he suffered in the Millwall game. Hopefully he is back for Saturday. That’s the aim.”

Hackney, Whittaker and Castledine will continue to be monitored. Alfie Jones is also closing in on a return but it's not clear at this stage when he'll be available to play. The same can be said of Sammy Silvera, who has been missing since suffering a stress fracture in January.

Meanwhile, Hellberg refused to point the finger of blame after the Swansea draw despite the fact Boro gifted the home side two penalties.

Alex Bangura and Sol Brynn both made needless fouls in the area that led to Swansea's two goals.

But Hellberg said: "To be honest everyone knows. You can see on the players when they concede those penalties you can’t concede those penalties. It’s very, very simple. They know that, I know that, you know that. Then we have to move on.

"Bangs scored a goal and I think his first 20 minutes is unbelievable, and Sol does a very good save at the end so that’s what you can do.

"You make mistake, everyone does it. I do it every day and how you grow from that is the key. That again shows character because it would have been so easy to put blame on people after those two pens but instead we go together.

"We created, was it 97 shots, I think it’s 71 inside the box in four games, and then keep going. That’s very strong from the group. I’m very impressed by the lads."
