Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard would like to see the Reds sign Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise to replace Mohamed Salah and admits he's really concerned by what he saw from the Reds in their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

Pep Guardiola's side cruised to victory in the FA Cup, while Arne Slot's side were well off the pace. Dominik Szoboszlai was highly critical of Liverpool's performance hammering a lack of fighting spirit.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Gerrard said: "They had their chances which they never took, we all know in the big games that you have to take their chances in the big games. City were outstanding but it was worrying and concerning the way Liverpool did crumble.

"But it's even more alarming what the players are saying after the game, saying there's no fight, 'we gave the game up', at Liverpool Football Club, that can't happen on the pitch and can't be said off it. Worrying, worrying times I must say."

Liverpool know they have to qualify for the Champions League to spare any embarrassing blushes this season, falling heavily from grace.

Mohamed Salah's departure this summer means the Reds know they'll to replace one talisman, with Gerrard naming the star he'd like to see replace him.

"The concern if you're trying to Salah, like-for-like, there's very few out there," Gerrard continued. "Olise would be one but I don't think he'd be available.

"From experience, being around Liverpool, the recruitment team will have different options, that doesn't necessarily mean like-for-like. When we had to replace Mane for example, we went for signed Diaz who was slightly different, when Suarez or Torres has left, they've had different type of options to replace the players.

"Liverpool have a fantastic record of replacing top players so I've got every confidence from a recruitment point of view that they'll have different options. They'll have to replace his goal involvements which is extremely difficult because he's been incredible for Liverpool for many years."

Liverpool are back in action tomorrow night when they take on PSG in the Champions League, with Slot undoubtedly looking for a response from his men.

"It’s also very crucial that we qualify for the Champions League of course for next season," Slot said. "There are only three or four days to go, so there are a few things you can do and one of the things we need to do if we play against Paris Saint-Germain or against Man City – teams of this level – you need to defend better than we did in the 20 minutes when we conceded the four goals.

"I think no-one will probably remember it but [in] the first 35 minutes there was a lot to like from my team. And it would be nice if we then can score a goal once in a while as well from the chances we create. And, again, we faced a team that was outperforming their xG by a mile, and that’s what happens constantly.

"And we every time are under that. But if you want to have a chance of beating Paris Saint-Germain, you have to do both parts better. If you generate chances, you have to score. And you cannot be so easily beaten with the four goals; three, because the penalty was between the other goals we conceded."
