Odysseas Vlachodimos reveals Newcastle United’s broken promises

**Odysseas Vlachodimos might be one of the more bizarre transfers in Newcastle United’s history.**

The Greek international goalkeeper arrived for a [whopping £20 million from Nottingham Forest](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2024/10/06/the-strange-story-of-odysseas-vlachodimos/) despite nobody at the club actually wanting him.

He came as part of the deal that saw Elliot Anderson go the other way for £35 million as both clubs fought to stave off a potential points deduction for breaching PSR. Forest clearly got the better of that deal.

Despite paying so much money for him, Eddie Howe had no interest in Vlachodimos, and his appearances for the Toon were as rare as hen’s teeth.

Newcastle allowed Vlachodimos to leave the club on loan this season, and the 31-year-old is enjoying life at Sevilla, and the club is enjoying having him. Unfortunately, the Spanish side doesn’t have the funds to extend his stay beyond this season.

It seems the Greek stopper has a bee in his bonnet at the moment and has spoken out about the broken promises made to him at Newcastle before his move, which may not be his best move, given he’s got to come back here at the end of the season. Ody has been speaking to Athletico, via [News Pao](https://newspao.gr/podosfairo/725668_vlachodimos-eicha-vrei-ti-roytina-moy-ston-panathinaiko-aytos-me-voithise-vid.html) where he’s claimed there was a plan for him at Newcastle initially.

> _“There was a plan for me. A week before the first match, the plan changed and the things they had told me didn’t happen._

>

> _“Despite this, I felt very good and so did my family at Newcastle. The thought came that you have to give something extra every day. That’s what I tried to do._

>

> _“From morning to noon, I was in the gym. Every day I wanted to do something different. I certainly wasn’t happy because I wasn’t playing._

>

> _“They told me something else. I was angry, but I worked. Ultimately, I do it for myself, I don’t do it for them. Every footballer wants to play.”I had the goal of going to the World Cup with the national team and that was what kept me going.”_

We obviously don’t know the ins and outs of what happened, but we’d be surprised if there was no truth to Ody’s claims. Newcastle must have told him something to convince him to come because if they’d told him the truth, he’d never have agreed.

There has to be a solution to end the nightmare for Ody and Newcastle. It’s clear he’s not wanted on Tyneside, but he’s shown in Spain that he’s still got plenty to give at a high level, so having him rotting in our squad just seems unfair.

To be honest, with all the problems we’ve had with goalkeepers this season, is he even that bad of an option?
