Manchester United have announced that Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract, ending speculation over his future. Maguire, 33, had entered the final few months of his existing deal and was on course to leave as a free agent this summer.

But the England international has now been handed a new contract until June 2027 following his resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick. United will also have an option to extend his deal by a further year.

Maguire commented: "Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.

"I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

"You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us."

A mainstay since Carrick's appointment in January, his form has helped the Red Devils rise to third in the Premier League table. Maguire also earned a recall to the England squad and he's in contention to go to the World Cup.

The centre-back joined United from Leicester City for a record-breaking £80million in 2019. Maguire was installed as club captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer less than a year into his stay, although he was later replaced by Bruno Fernandes during Erik ten Hag's reign in 2023.

Director of football Jason Wilcox added: "Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad. Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success."

Maguire remains one of the most influential characters in United's squad and has helped them win two trophies - the Carabao Cup and FA Cup - in recent years. Earlier this season, Carrick labelled the 33-year-old and his experience 'invaluable'.

"Harry's an impressive character," the Red Devils boss said. "He's had a great career so far. Hopefully, there's a lot more to come. I think, even while he's been here, in the journey and the experiences that he's had, certainly since he's been here and with England as well, I think he's shown exactly what he is."

Carrick added: "Experience is massive. It's hard to put a price on how valuable that can be. Harry has gained an awful lot of experience with this club. Case (Casemiro) leaving is another one and we have to understand what that means."

Maguire is currently in Dublin with the rest of United's squad as part of a training camp, as they make the most of a long stretch without a game. Carrick's side return to action on Monday at home to Leeds, although Maguire is suspended following his red card at Bournemouth on March 20.
