Manchester United announce new deal for star man following revival under Michael Carrick

Harry Maguire has put pen to paper on a new Manchester United contract.

The towering defender has become a mainstay in the Red Devils backline following Michael Carrick's appointment earlier in the year.

Carrick succeeded Ruben Amorim at the Old Trafford helm in January and immediately instilled Maguire as one of his first-choice centre-backs.

Maguire's form saw him rewarded with an England recall last month, and he played the full 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

And the 33-year-old, whose previous deal expired later this year, has signed a 12-month contract with an option for a further year.

Mainoo is another who has come back into favour at Old Trafford having been heavily linked with a January exit.

The 20-year-old, like Maguire, was also rewarded with an England call-up last month, and he featured in both meetings with Uruguay and Japan.

United are set to more than quadruple Mainoo's wages, with the young midfielder expected to take home £120,000-per-week until 2031.

Both Maguire and Mainoo have established themselves as key players under Carrick since the former Middlesbrough boss returned to the Old Trafford dugout.

United have collected 23 points from Carrick's ten league games in charge since being named United head coach until the end of the season in mid-January.

And the club's revival under Carrick has seen them move up to third in the Premier League - six points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool in the race to secure a Champions League spot.

Carrick's side return to league duties following the international break next Monday when they welcome rivals Leeds to Old Trafford.

United then travel to Chelsea the following week before games against Brentford, Liverpool, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Brighton to see out the season.

On his new deal, Maguire told the official United website: "Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.

"I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

"You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us."

United director of football Jason Wilcox added: "Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.

"Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success."
