Opinion: Everton at risk of repeating Tyler Dibling mistake with £20m summer move

Everton must be wary of repeating their Tyler Dibling transfer again this summer.

Following a huge weekend for Southampton, it has been claimed that Everton are interested in signing Shea Charles.

David Moyes will have watched the midfielder score the winning goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Everton must avoid repeating Tyler Dibling transfer with Shea Charles

Dibling has struggled massively since making his big-money transfer last summer.

Even during the international break, Dibling admitted he enjoyed being away from Everton as it allowed him to play with freedom.

How can Tyler Dibling actually turn things around at Everton? 🤷‍♂️

It's going to need some turnaround from the youngster 😫

It is a transfer that is yet to work out and Everton risk repeating it by showing interest in another Southampton youngster.

At 22 years of age, Charles has not been a consistent starter for Southampton following his return from injury earlier this year.

After making his comeback from a hamstring injury in January, Charles has only played a full 90 minutes on three occasions in the Championship.

The midfielder has only started 41% of Southampton’s Championship games this season.

Moyes has admitted Dibling needs to show more at Everton if he is to get into the starting XI on Merseyside.

But the youngster looks set to see out the 2025/26 season having barely played on the back of his big move in the summer.

That is something that both Everton and Charles will want to avoid.

Everton have a surplus of midfield options

Midfield is an area where Everton have a wealth of quality options.

James Garner has nailed down the starting spot in midfield, with a seriously impressive campaign for the Blues.

Idrissa Gana Gueye’s Everton future hangs in the balance, but the Toffees could extend his deal by another year in the summer.

And then there are players like Harrison Armstrong, Merlin Rohl and Tim Iroegbunam, who are all waiting in the wings.

Unless there is movement over the summer, it is hard to see where Charles could fit in.
